What is it
Learner Mosaic is an iPhone app which enables parents/carers to turn normal, daily experiences with preschool children into meaningful learning moments. The app allows the user to create a picture (or mosaic) of their child’s strengths, struggles and passions; once these have been identified parents then get personalised, research-based tips and activity suggestions. The activities range from ways to encourage correct pencil grip, role playing a restaurant and creating an outdoor obstacle course.
Through using the app parents are encouraged to observe their children and use these observations to help their child develop. Over time the app becomes a personalised parent handbook full of ideas and tips which are tailored to your child/children.

What our experts think
This app is American but it is still relevant in the UK and the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). Within the EYFS there are 3 prime areas (communication and language; physical development; and personal, social and emotional development) these are addressed within the app and there are some really good ideas for supporting children’s development. It also supports children in the four specific areas outlined in the EYFS: literacy; mathematics; understanding the world; and expressive arts and design.
We really liked the range of play ideas provided and felt that they would be useful for any parent; there are clear instructions, time frames and resource lists. There are also tips on what to look for from a developmental point of view and the pedagogy behind the activity.
This app could also be of use to childcare workers; users can add more than one child.
It would be even better if...
We felt that the app would be better if there was an English version which was directly linked to the EYFS. It would also be great if the app could be extended beyond preschool age children.
