### What is it

Montessori Math City is designed by teachers and  app developers.  It helps children to count up to 1000 through exploring Place Value.

The app uses Montessori maths equipment -such as the golden beads or the Seguin (or Tens) board- to help children understand the value and relationship of units, tens and hundreds.

The app is a progressive game with items to unlock in each level: cars, ferris wheels, ambulances, houses, buildings. Children practice counting and making numbers, the app rewards them by unlocking items so they can play in their own unique City.

The app includes a secured parents’ area explaining the pedagogy behind the app.

### What our team of testers said

"You have to match the balls to the numbers" - Boy aged 5

"I like that you can build your own city after completing the maths" - Girl aged 8

### Skills Developed

• Develops children's understanding of place value
• Allows children to explore the value of digits within numbers up to 1000

### What our experts think

We liked the way in which the app used clear visual representation to show children the value of different digits. Place Value is a concept which is integral to the teaching of Numeracy – children need a solid understanding of it if they are to move on to work with other mathematical operations.
We liked the fact that children earn rewards and could use these to build their city; this is a good contrast to the main learning of the app and the children we observed really did enjoy building the city, making it a great incentive for them to complete the maths tasks.

### It would be even better if...

We felt the app would be better if parents could choose where their child should start. Some children may not need to start at the very beginning as they may already have a solid understanding ; the progression is important and children do need to have understood the earlier stages before moving on, but some children may be bored working through these and would be better off skipping them.
