Birthday Presents for Children: Gift Ideas for 6 Year Olds

Not sure what toys to buy for a six year-old? Read on for some tips and suggestions from the Good Toy Guide experts!

These are some examples of toys that a child of this age may enjoy, but please remember that every child is unique and has a preference for different toys and brands.

Arts & Crafts

Children love making things for their friends and family and there is often a playground craze that children can’t get enough of. If this craze is a creative toy that can be given to friends to promote attachment then adults buying it will not only help children develop a range of skills, but they’ll seem very cool and on trend!

Nutty Putty is a great art material for this age – children can use the colourful putty to create their own designs from scratch and either reuse the putty, or bake it to keep or gift.

Books & Magazines

As children learn to read independently they can be encouraged in their reading with appealing books or magazines. It matters less what children read at this age and more that they become confident readers of whatever piques their interest. Look for books or magazines that relate to a particular character, theme or hobby that a child is interested in and don’t just go for non-fiction.

Role Play

6 year olds will still enjoy role play, and this will be becoming more planned – for example, discussing the roles and the plot before playing. Props that support role play can be popular at this age.

Dolls are often used in role play, and one of our favourite ranges is Bonnie & Pearl – they have a range of dolls with beautiful detail that children love, as well as a range of outfits to choose from.

Children this age will be starting to enjoy problem solving; not just classic jigsaw puzzles but also multi level puzzle games.

The Colour Code game from Smart Games is a wonderful puzzle game that we’ve seen children become absolutely absorbed in. The aim is to stack tiles with coloured shapes in the correct order to match a final picture – there is a booklet included with 25 levels to try, ranging from starter to master, so children can build their confidence as they play.

Tech Toys

Gadgets and toys that interact with tablets are increasingly starting to feature in play time.

If you are thinking of buying a tablet for a child, have a look at our tablet comparison guide for more information on features – such as parental controls and content – that are key when considering a tablet for a child.

One tablet that is particularly good for this age is the Kurio TAB with Motion; Kurio tablets have good parental controls, and this tablet also comes with 50 preloaded apps. The camera also recognises movement so children can play games by moving their body, helping get them active too!

Outdoor Toys

Balls, play houses, climbing frames, and other outdoor toys are great for encouraging children to play actively outside and burn off some of that energy. Instilling an active approach to life can help children develop a healthy body and mental attitude that will stay with them into adulthood.

The TP Toys Spiro Hop is a great twist on the traditional seesaw, as it not only goes up and down but also spins around! It’s also cleverly balanced so children of different weights can play together (so it’s ideal for older and younger siblings).
