Developmental Milestones: 10 Years

As brains are absorbing a variety of information at a rapid pace, children are able to expand their reasoning with predictions and accuracy.

Having much more control over their body, strength is rapidly increasing, sports and active play are becoming easier and less tiring. If they are showing signs of having a particular sporting talent they will excel fast at this age.

Friendships are gradually becoming a large part of a child’s life and can be very influential.

Please keep in mind that these milestones are guidelines only, as all children are different and develop at their own pace. Do not be concerned if your child does not perfectly ‘tick all the boxes’ and avoid comparing your child to other children of a similar age. If you are worried that your child’s development is particularly delayed, visit your GP.

  • Children are able to plan and predict with increasing accuracy
  • They will be using logic to explain reactions and using their findings to make further predictions
  • Adults can help children think about things outside of their immediate time frame and environment which will facilitate development of more sophisticated thought processes and learn skills such as predicting consequences of action and dealing with hypothetical situations
  • Attention to detail is getting better and children will be starting to take pride in their work, designs and creations as they start to appreciate an objective view of quality
  • Group and team activities are particularly enjoyed and spending time with friends is important to them
  • Building strong relationships with peers is continuing and friendships are becoming a big part of their lives
  • High levels of co-ordination and control over their body is possible at this age, making dance, sport and general movement all  rewarding. Children with a talent for a particular skill or activity can progress rapidly within the area
  • Hand-eye coordination is far more developed, as is finger control. Activities that require small, delicate movements such as sewing or playing a musical instrument are now possible and enjoyable
  • Children will be growing fast as growth hormones kick in. They will be getting taller and heavier now, particularly girls
  • Language is developing fast at this stage and children are absorbing and experimenting with plenty of words making communicating far more interesting for them
  • They can now hold an in-depth conversation with young friends or even adults and enjoy expressing their ideas and achievements
  • Their writing style is often more adventurous or articulate than their verbal usage of words
  • They will start to be forming opinions of their own and will be reacting  accordingly
  • As their artistic development increases they start to recognise quality and flaws becoming more critical of their own work and comparing it to that of their peers

At 10 years old, a child’s understanding of the world is being guided by the National Curriculum subjects.

Children love to play and this is a great way to support their development and learning. See below for our independently tested and approved toys and apps to support your 10 year old’s development.
