Developmental Milestones: 7 Years

Fine motor skills are becoming honed around this age so handwriting can be legible and precise. Sports are becoming easier, enjoyable and varied whilst helping to build strength.

Although speech is probably the widest form of communication children are using at present, they will be starting to write stories, read a variety of texts and create pictures through art – all of which are valuable forms of expression as the child matures. Children will be able to start using their own individuality, personal experiences and imagination when creating pieces of work.

Please keep in mind that these milestones are guidelines only, as all children are different and develop at their own pace. Do not be concerned if your child does not perfectly ‘tick all the boxes’ and avoid comparing your child to other children of a similar age. If you are worried that your child’s development is particularly delayed, visit your GP.

  • Memory is now sufficiently developed for recollection
  • Play activities can now span over days and weeks with a theme being continued and expanded upon. This is laying down the foundations for more complex thought patterns such as sophisticated reasoning, logic and abstract thought
  • Sense of self is beginning to develop and a sense of belonging is very important
  • Children respond well to knowing rules and receiving positive reinforcement from obeying them. It’s easier for children to remember a few firm rules that are applied consistently than too many vague rules that sometimes don’t apply
  • At this age children want to be liked and accepted by their peers.  They can form strong bonds with individuals and will talk about a ‘best friend’
  • They enjoy playing in groups and find turn-taking and sharing easier
  • Play is often more popular with the same gender
  • Fine motor skills are normally honed around this age so handwriting can be legible and precise actions such as threading a needle and tying shoe laces all become possible
  • Sports are becoming more interesting and rewarding as they start to progress in their achievements and become physically stronger
  • Whilst speech is still the primary form of communication at this age (and the easiest), at school they will be learning to communicate in other ways too – writing, acting, drawing – all of which help children convey the messages they want others to receive as well as understanding how other people can communicate with them
  • Story telling and sharing experiences with you is becoming more common
  • Arts and crafts are becoming more detailed now, the child will be finding it easier to hold a pen and paint brush correctly and to draw the lines or shapes of the object they are trying to create
  • Imagination and decision making will play a large part in the creations
  • Getting children to choose the materials, colours and objects they wish to draw or manipulate is great at making art exciting and encouraging individuality

At 7 years old, a child’s understanding of the world is being guided by the National Curriculum subjects.

Children love to play and this is a great way to support their development and learning. See below for our independently tested and approved toys and apps to support your 7 year old’s development.
