How to Play

Get a plastic bottle and fill it halfway with water. Then add blue food colouring to make the water look sea coloured.  Now insert sand, toy sharks or fish, shells and some glitter or whatever you have to hand.  Now top up the bottle with oil (the oil creates a wave effect as it does not mix with the water).  Glue the lid on tightly, let children rock the bottle back and forth, place it down on it’s side and watch  their own mini ocean come to life and see how the waves roll. The water will move up and down, and the wave will be bigger at one end and smaller at the other. In the ocean, water doesn’t move forward but moves up and down as the wave travels through the water. It is the friction between the water and wind that makes a wave.

By asking questions about what the children observe will also encourage children  to extend their vocabulary. Here are some words to get you started rolling, crashing, calm, tidal, movement
