What is it
The programme is made up of 4 lovable Mark Maker characters to represent the 4 principal marks that form all numbers, letters, patterns and shapes. Once a child is able to make each of the 4 marks, they will then be able to write any letter or number.
Lionel the Soldier Mark for straight lines.
Archie the Rainbow Mark for curves.
Swirlo the Magic Pot for circles.
Ziggy the Monster Mark for Zig-zags.

What our experts think
The bright and colourful Mark Makers Activity Book is a great way to introduce young children to mark-making and helps them grow in confidence when using a pencil. Our testers liked that it uses stories, characters and activities such as making gloop to reinforce learning different marks and shapes.
Mark making is important as it allows young children to improve their dexterity and strengthen the muscles in their fingers needed for a pincer grip. This helps them to progress to writing with a pencil or pen. The book is not wipeable, which would be a bonus – however, our testers did find that if they used the reverse end of the pencil on parts they were practising, this made it possible to use again and again.
