What our experts think

Ant Mountain is an engaging science project for children, allowing them to set up, feed and maintain their own live colony of ants. This is a great way to provide real-world understanding of science and nature as it allows children to get really hands on with the process. For children of school age, this is ideal as it also provides them with opportunities to take ownership of their own learning at home which helps to develop confidence.

Watching how the ant colony develops also promotes important STEM skills such as observation and prediction and the children enjoyed monitoring what the ants were doing. This also encouraged them to ask questions about what was happening; which in addition to developing logical reasoning, allows children to build their confidence in using a scientific vocabulary.
