What our experts think
Build a Beetle was thoroughly enjoyed by our testers. The rules are very simple so children picked it up in no time, and were able to play independently. The game is luck-based which made it exciting for children without being too challenging for them. This makes it a wonderful game for pre-schoolers to develop their social skills, including taking turns. We saw one child roll a number that another player needed, and they offered to ‘give’ their spin to the other player – it was lovely to see this sense of fairness and sharing.
The game also lets children experience friendly competition; although all of them had a sense of achievement when they finished building their beetle. While playing children are also practising colour recognition and number matching, supporting Maths skills. It was frustrating for children having to wait to roll a six before they could start building their beetle, which helps teach them patience, but this part can be skipped for younger players who might be put off by it.
