What is it
Codenames is a social word game with challenging game play and a simple premise. Play as two rival spymasters trying to reveal the secret identities of 25 agents to their teammates using only their codenames. The Spymasters give one-word clues that can point to multiple words on the board. Their teammates try to guess words of the right colour while avoiding those that belong to the opposing team – as well as the assassin!

What our experts think
This game was really popular with our testers, who just loved the codebreaking style challenge. The instructions are very complex, but they did get the hang of it after a few plays; it might help to watch an online video to understand the gameplay. Giving and solving clues is great for logical thinking and communication skills, as Spymasters have to work out how to give clues that their teammates will understand, and the teammates themselves have to use the clues to eliminate possible words from the grid.
We found that our testers got very competitive whilst playing – this is a great way to teach children how to win and lose respectfully. Teammates are also encouraged to discuss their solutions with one another, developing further social skills and an appreciation of other people’s ideas.
