What our experts think
Our testers loved making the sweets in their own ‘factory’ and it was great to see them learning about a range of topics as they played. As children followed the instructions they started discussions around the amount of sugar in food – particularly sweets – and practised their maths skills by weighing the ingredients and measuring temperatures. They also tried out different flavours, encouraging creativity.
It also showed them in an interesting way how states of matter can change, helping them learn about different materials and their properties (which is part of the English National Curriculum, Science, Key Stage 2). The booklets use scientific terms and explain the reasons why the materials acted a certain why, helping reinforce children’s knowledge.
It would be even better if...
Many of the tasks need a lot of adult supervision (for example, boiling sugar). Not all of the materials are supplied (an image of a lollipop indicates the ones that are) so be prepared to supply a few ingredients yourself.
