Wheeled toys is not just about boys and toy cars. We’ve found that girls enjoy playing with wheeled toys too and there are benefits all round when children play with toy vehicles.
Wheels encourage children to play more actively and role play or small world play (e.g. playmobil, Sylvanian Families, etc) that girls typically engage in becomes more expansive when wheeled toys are included as they promote movement between areas and involve the concept of travel.
Boys tend to engage more with imaginative play when the props include wheeled toys and so benefit from the social development that this type of play promotes (communication skills, empathy, cooperation).
Wheels help keep the children moving as the toys have a tendency to roll away, but all toy vehicles can add an active angle to imaginative play, so rocket, pirate ships and sledges can all be included in the toy box and parents can relax and let children have fun with their imagination.
