Description

Gridopolis is a multiple award-winning, 3D tabletop strategy game designed for 2 to 4 players. It challenges children and adults to think ahead, adapt their tactics and respond to changing game conditions. Recommended by Dr Gummer’s Good Play Guide, it offers an engaging introduction to strategic thinking without complex rules.

The aim of the game is to move markers across and through a three-dimensional board, eliminating opponents and scoring points along the way. While the rules are easy to learn, similar to checkers, the added depth of playing in three dimensions keeps every game fresh and unpredictable. The board itself can change during play, encouraging flexible thinking and planning.

Gridopolis is a strategy game that stands out with its 3D, modular board and ever-changing layouts, ensuring no two games are the same.

Most of our testers needed adult support to get started, with instructions read aloud and sometimes rules adjusted as they played. With play underway, differences in age and confidence became clear. Children around 11 and up grasped the core mechanics quickly and began playing strategically during the first game. They enjoyed the comparisons to chess, particularly the need to think ahead, anticipate others players' moves and adapt as the 3D structure of the game changed.

Children around 8-10 years initially struggled with some of the rules, especially around movement and levels, but improved with each round. Repeated play helped build understanding and confidence grew, so the game supports learning through experience rather than instant mastery. It's best suited to children who are already comfortable with multi-step rules and abstract thinking and supports a wide range of skills like strategic thinking, spatial reasoning, planning ahead and resilience when things don’t go to plan.
