Description
The Osmo Coding Starter Kit builds coding skills in progression with 3 hands-on learning games. Watch your child learn to code as they connect colourful blocks of code in the physical world to chart the adventure on their screen.
The Osmo product itself comprises a base to stand your iPad in and what they refer to as the Reflector which slots over the iPad’s front-facing camera. The area in front of the tablet is the playing field – real-world items in this area are seen by the iPad. Compatible with iPad 2 and up and also a Fire tablet.
What our testers said
“The children really enjoyed navigating Awbie around the map” – Mum of a 7 & 9 year old
“This is so cool” – Girl aged 7
“I like trying to make different sounds by adding more pieces” – Boy aged 7
What our experts think
Osmo Coding Starter Kit introduces children to the world of coding by combining physical pieces with onscreen games. This unique approach helps develop their understanding by allowing them to hold the pieces of the ‘code’ in their hands. For example, in the first game, children are required to slot the different pieces together to command the character, Awbie to move.
As their confidence grows, children can move on to the other two games which feature tougher problems to solve. They get children thinking strategically – for example, using the directional coding blocks in the correct order encourages children to plan their route before setting the instructions.
The apps were easy to download and the iPad fitted well into the base (although we did need to remove its case
