What our experts think
A lovely role play item that caused lots of giggles and smiles from our testers. Our testers loved playing imaginatively and were immediately immersed. This type of real world play promotes creativity and storytelling and helps children develop their understanding of the world around them, as they make sense of real life situations using their own stories. There was lots of talking as they verbalised their play – developing language and vocabulary related to their imaginary scenarios.
The addition of the box for the popcorn enhanced the playability of the toy as it meant the children could ‘serve’ their customer and complete a life-like shop based role play. Putting the corn in the drawer and using the handle to make it pop requires some dexterity – important for developing fine motor skills at this age in preparation for holding a pen and fastening buttons. Some of the younger children needed to be shown what to do, but once shown they could do it independently.
