“She looks like me! I like that we match”- Girl, aged 6
“Kyya is my best friend. I brush her hair and take her on adventures” Girl, aged 5
Kyya is a beautifully designed 18-inch talking doll that quickly captured the attention of our testers, thanks to her soft curls, sparkling brown eyes and soothing voice. Many children were eager to welcome her into their imaginative play, using Kyya to create family scenes, friendship stories and comforting bedtime routines.
What makes Kyya stand out is her focus on emotional wellbeing and positive representation. Her gentle affirmations, particularly those centred around identity and self-worth, struck a chord with both children and parents. She provides an empowering, inclusive play experience, especially for Black girls, who may not always see themselves reflected in their toys.
While some minor improvements to the speaker volume and setup instructions would enhance usability, these did not take away from Kyya’s core value. Her positive messages, combined with open-ended play opportunities, help nurture confidence, self-awareness and emotional literacy in a meaningful way.
