Spike the Hedgehog has lots of sensory features to explore, fostering children’s curiosity while helping them to strengthen and coordinate the muscles in their hands and fingers. The different features are highlighted in different colours meaning as children experiment with twisting, turning, pressing and pulling they are also encouraged to develop their colour recognition skills.
We found interacting with the different tactile features provides a good opportunity for adults to model and introduce some scientific vocabulary such as ‘pull’, ‘push, ‘up’ and ‘down’. The hedgehog also made a good addition as a fidget toy to the classroom, helping a child with SEN focus his attention and engage with the teacher.
