What our experts think
Minecraft is a sandbox-style game that children can approach in different ways. They can focus on building a world from the ground up, encouraging creativity and flexible thinking which is good for problem solving. They can be imaginative and social with their play as their characters and their friends characters explore the world together.
In survival mode children need to be strategic about their buildings so that, when attacked by monsters, they hold up. This also encourages trial and error learning as they find out what works best and improve buildings where needed. Materials are limited (unless in creative mode) so they also have to think about the best use for them.
